DEMOCRATIC REALISM

While accepting the 2004 Irving Kristol Award, Charles delivered a tour de force analysis of international relations theory and proposed a new grand strategy of Democratic Realism: "It must be targeted, focused and limited. THE UNIPOLAR MOMENT

In 1990, Charles described the post-Cold War world, asserting "we are in for abnormal times. Read it here.

DECLINE IS A CHOICE

Entering into the debate about America's role in the world, Charles argued in 2009 "two decades into the unipolar world that came about with the fall of the Soviet Union, America is in the position of deciding whether to abdicate or retain its dominance.
